For their collaborative project titled "The Book of Mormon Missionary Positions", Portland-based photographer Neil DaCosta and art director Sara Phillips created a tongue-in-cheek photo series that pokes fun at religion and sexual politics. According to the Latter Day Saints Handbook, “Sexual relations are proper only between a man and a woman who are legally and lawfully wedded as husband and wife. Any other sexual relations, including those between persons of the same gender, are sinful and undermine the divinely created institution of the family." Speaking about the project Neil said, "We wanted to create a conversation with a younger creative audience and to question their view on the position of the Church and same-sex marriage."

This is so very very offensive. I don't think anything I've come across on the internet, especially regarding "art" has ever been more offensive.
ReplyDeleteTheir "goal" of the project is no where captured in this. If this were using Jews,Muslims, Catholics, or any other religion you would be ridiculed and scorned like no other. Shame on you and the creators of this project. For real though, shame on them. This is ridiculous.
Get over it. It's funny because it's a play on words and if you believe there isn't more offensive art out there(especially dealing with world religions) you obviously haven't been exposed to much art.
ReplyDeleteso great! hahaha keep it up!
ReplyDeleteHey I really like your blog, and I read it every day - but this bothers me. Just thought you should know. Also, what does this have to do with Junk Culture?
ReplyDeleteSometime the deliberate use of shock in art can open up a dialogue. By looking at the comments above, one can clearly see that the photographs were very successful in achieving that goal.
ReplyDeleteI also think this is very offensive. Who would do something so RUDE as to "poke fun" at a religion because YOU don't like what is says. would you like it if someone made fun of your religion? Just plain RUDE.
ReplyDeleteI don't believe this achieves much in the way of making people question their views on same sex relationships. If anything it affirms them as being repugnant, dirty, perverse setting back the cause. The best thing anyone can do for the cause is to make people identify with the love and commitment that same sex couples feel, rather than highlight what they get up to behind closed doors. We don't think about what hetero couples do, so why should we be thinking about what homosexual couples do? For the record I have no issue with such relationships, nor does it change how I feel about them.
ReplyDeleteI think its ridiculous how people get offended. As an LDS member said years ago in General conference is our own decision to get offended. If you dont like what its shown in this website why would you go and look at it. Just dont look or search ay things you don't like, it's as simple as that.
