Kevin Champeny: Killing Field
New York-based artist Kevin Champeny creates astounding artworks made from thousands of tiny objects. His latest piece titled "Killing Field" is a large mosaic depicting a realistic image of bullet shells created using 12,500 hand cast animal pieces. The message conveyed through this images is clear, as human greed continues to expand, so does the plight of our precious animals.

I know this is splitting hairs, but those are fully intact shotgun shells, not empty bullet shells as you implied.
ReplyDeleteNone the less, very cool.
Thanks for the correction!
ReplyDeleteDoes this artist make the animal pieces or does he use existing models? I ask because unless he is repurposing existing junk for this project, he is just adding to the problem. Although his project is interesting, I follow this site because of the possibility of art from junk. Can you clarify?
ReplyDeleteYes, all the animal pieces are individually cast by the artist.
ReplyDeleteAll of the resin I use in my sculptural pieces is reclaimed from my regular work. The material I use is destined to be forced-cured and thrown away. It is reclaimed from previously color matched for other clients. When their job is finished, the colors used for their specific projects can not be used for any one else, I rematch the colors to fit what ever project I am currently working on. I have reduced my potential waste from around 30% to less than 1%. The silicone I use is also reclaimed from the extra needed to pour the quantities of molds I make professionally.
