Dark Alabama Underpass is Transformed Into a Mesmerizing Light Installation

Using a neglected street underpass in downtown Birmingham, Alabama, artist Bill Fitzgibbons created a site specific art installation controlled by a computerized LED light system. The project titled "Light Rails" illuminates the dark and uninviting underpass with thousands of colors encouraging pedestrian traffic in a vital connection between two growing areas of downtown Birmingham. The installation created in collaboration with REV Birmingham is part of a master plan being developed by a team of local artists, designers and lighting experts, aiming to create a vision for liveliness, connectivity, community cohesiveness and a greater sense of security in Birmingham by illuminating key structures and pedestrian traffic points within the City Center and surrounding districts.
