Photographer Jackie Nickerson Transforms Farm Workers into Artful Sculptural Figures

African farm workers from Kenya, Zambia, Zimbabwe and South Africa, are the subject of a fascinating new exhibit of photographs by Jackie Nickerson now on view at Jack Shainman Gallery in New York. The projects titled "Terrain", documents the relationship between individuals and the landscape in relation to food production and farming practices. The result is a series of photographs in which utilitarian materials associated with agricultural labor such as packing crates, sheaths of burlap and tattered banana leaves are stacked, coiled, balanced and held by the subjects, becoming beautiful hybrid sculptural figures.
