Cocoons: Photos of Buildings Under Construction in Hong Kong Wrapped in Vibrant Fabrics

Buildings covered in brightly colored fabrics while undergoing construction are the subject of a fascinating series of images by Singapore-based photographer Peter Steinhauer titled "Cocoons". This traditional building technique of utilizing bamboo scaffolding and wrapping buildings in silk fabric is a style of construction that is unique to Hong Kong. No one else anywhere in Asia uses this method, and it is understandable how Steinhauer, on his first visit to the city in January 1994 thought that the artist Christo and his wife-collaborator Jeanne-Claude had a new project wrapping buildings there.
