The Sentinels: A Group of Large Scale Textural Sculptures Created with Recycled Tires

Designed by iconic New York-based artist Chakaia Booker, "The Sentinels", is a group of five large-scale sculptures constructed from rubber tires and stainless steel tubing, that will arouse the curiosity of  passersby in NYC’s Garment District Plazas this summer. The impressive sculptures were first designed digitally and then constructed with the help of an engineer and Booker’s fabricator Alston Van Putten Jr. “Placing these sculptures in the Garment District suggests a cross pollination, and cultivation of current, past and future behavior,” said Chakaia Booker. “I hope this installation helps create a sense of community progression, symbolizing how this neighborhood has grown into the vibrant, creative and artistic center it is today.”
