Artist Thomas Mailaender Uses a UV Lamp to Create Sunburned Photographic Skin Prints

French multimedia artist Thomas Mailaender, blends together elements of performance art creating images that are humorous and unexpected. For his series “Illustrated People”, Mailaender applied 23 original negatives selected from the Archive of Modern Conflict’s collection to the skin of models before projecting a powerful UV lamp over them, thus revealing fleeting images on the sunburnt skin. Maileander then photographed each of his models before the sun made the image disappear. Mailaender has published a photo book of all the photographic skin prints interspersed with black and white archival photos found in AMC’s collection.
